My Rockport

(Anti-)Social Media and Drugs Awareness Day at Rockport

On Tuesday 7th November, the PSNI arrived at Rockport to deliver a comprehensive day-long programme to pupils from R5 to 6th Form regarding the inappropriate use of Social Media and Drugs.

The programme was age-appropriate and was followed up by a presentation to parents, which clearly explained the legal stance around young people and social media, and illegal drugs.

The day was punctuated by the arrival of Sam, the police sniffer dog, who carefully pin-pointed where drugs had been stashed by his trainer in an operation designed to show the children how effective these dogs are at sniffing out inappropriate substances.

The lasting message coming back from the day for all pupils was, if you are in any doubt about something happening, about which you feel uncomfortable, you must always tell a safe adult.

The timings of the day over ran, but that was testament to the successful engagement with our young people, who actively participated and very openly engaged in a range of discussions around social media and drugs.

We are very grateful to the PSNI Bangor Neighbourhood team, Constables Gary and Ken and also to dog handler; Emma for working with us to deliver such an important message. It's something that as a school we take very seriosuly and understand our responsibility. The children, staff and parents all learnt a lot from the day.

Mrs Crosslé said,

"It was an excellent session, I found it very useful and informative.  It struck the right balance between hard facts and humour - much needed in what can be such a dark and difficult area.

As a parent of an eleven year old it gave me useful information for now and the future, including setting boundaries early on, and always trying to keep open communication with your child - it's great to see my Son's school taking the initiaive and working proactively with parents on such matters."
