Rockport School welcome Mrs Monica Yang, MBE to speak at annual Speech Day

This year’s guest of honour at the annual Rockport Speech day will be Mrs Monica Yang MBE, continuing a school tradition of inviting thought-provoking keynote speakers: a list which has recently included Irish President Mary McAleese, Archbishop of Armagh Lord (Robin) Eames as well as entrepreneur and founder of Wetherspoons, Tim Martin.

Monica who is originally from Inner Mongolia, Mainland China has been living in Northern Ireland for 25 years. She has studied and worked in Ulster University and has worked for many years at Queen's University as senior international officer. Recently, she moved to London and is working in another higher education institution for international education collaborations.

Monica was also the chairperson of Northern Ireland Council for Ethnic Minority and chairperson of Mandarin Speakers Association, and was awarded an MBE for services to the Chinese community in Northern Ireland in 2007.

When awarded her MBE, she said: “To receive this honour was wonderful. I was really pleased to receive such a high award from the Queen. To be recognised for my work is very, very touching and I really do feel Northern Irish after receiving this award.”

In January this year, her book - "Chinese Mum and Her British Boy" was published in China and in a very short period time, it was ranked as the 3ird most popular new parenting book in Dangdang (equivalence of Amazon for books) in China.

In January Monica was elected to the Rockport Board of Governors and we are grateful to her for taking time out of her busy schedule to address our young people. We know they will listen to her words and take away some element that will resonate with them.
