My Rockport

World famous artist inspired by Rockport pupils

Thursday 8th June was certainly a night to remember for Rockport GCSE and A Level art students who had the privilege of world famous artist Colin Davidson critiquing their work at the Stretching the Canvas exhibition - the highlight event of a year-long programme for our art students. (See previous article here)

Invited guests were greeted with a canapé and drinks reception at the Ava Gallery on the Clandeboye Estate, where they could enjoy the work of our talented young artists in a truly spectacular setting.

After an official welcome from Mr Paul Lutton, and a few words from project facilitators, Visual Artists Ireland, and sponsors, Standard Utilities, Colin Davidson gave a fascinating lecture on his artistic process. He recounted the evolution of his art from cityscapes to his larger than life portraits, of figures ranging from Brad Pitt and Her Majesty the Queen to victims of the Northern Irish Troubles. He encouraged those listening that art is not about finding the answers, but asking the questions – a message that was as pertinent to the parents and teachers in the audience, as it was to the students.

Colin finished by saying he was inspired by the works on show and it was a truly fabulous night all round.

Feel free to have a look at the official photo gallery and the excellent official programme for the evening.
